Tilda Swinton carries this wonderful Italian movie, where she plays a wife to a husband who is one of the heads of a very wealthy family that owns a textile company in Milan.
Movie Trailer: Much in this movie has to be inferred. As an audience, you aren't spoon-fed information, but are expected to gleam it from the visuals and the dialogues. It’s part of the charm of this movie though, that everything isn't obvious and over-stated.
The visuals are beautiful, the soundtrack is very confident, and all the actors play their part beautifully.
Beautiful buildings |
Buildings and locations also play an important part in the visuals of the movie. The mansion, gardens, locations in London and places in and around Milan and their architecture, in scenes interspersed between others, add to the beauty of the film.
The haircut that brought it all |
The movie starts out slowly, introducing the family and the functions between its various members. The crux of the story is how a married woman is able to find and awaken her passion, and the breakdown of the family towards the end of the movie for various reasons.
There is a certain gastronomic quality to the movie. Like Antonio’s signature recipes, the scenes in the movie focus on the essence of each situation, the seeds for actions that are performed later on, and so forth.
Ukha, a traditional Russian soup made from different fish, appears several times in the movie |
Some scenes feel artificial, but I suppose that is only a visual style of the movie, perhaps a tribute to Old Italian films. The movie actually has lots of heart; the central theme IS one of ‘feeling’, going with the flow, and breaking traditions for passion.
A beautiful film, an experience that shouldn't be missed.
One of my favourite foreign films in a while.
