This is a fantasy novel. Reader's of Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' will be familiar with some of the back-story, but it isn't really important even if you haven't read it, because it explains everything to you anyways. The best parts of this story are the flashbacks which are incredibly detailed, which you see through the mind-eyes of the main protagonist(Miranda). Most of the history of the Prospero family is told through flashbacks, and let me tell you this, innumerable mentions have been made in this book to countless gods, magic, mythological creatures, fairytales and whatnot from various nationalities even.
One of the problems with the book is the main character, Miranda, who is thoroughly boring most of the times. In fact, it's the side characters(the Aerie Noir Detective and the sometimes insane brother) who provide relief in the parts where the novel is firmly based in the present, and though we undergo this quest with her, the reader can't help but wish for more characters to aid her in her quest, just so they can have less of her.
That being said, there is a lot of imagination involved in this world created. As i said befored, the flashbacks are the best part of the story, and as these people are immortal(kind of) the flashbacks range throughout history, making for entertaining stuff(robbing the Vatican of magical goodies being one).
All in all, a very good read, and a must read for a fantasy enthusiast.
Ooh but did I forget, it doesn't end here. It has a sequel. And i can't wait.
